April Julep Maven box has arrived!

Caitlin & Mariska Polishes by Julep
Caitlin & Mariska Polishes

I thought I’d start off the blog with a review of the Julep Maven March box. It contained two colors from the “Classic with a Twist” Collection. The first is Mariska, a slightly satiny Orange color. The second is Caitlin, a very bright pink with a slight orange-y shimmer.

I used the Orly Bonder Rubberizing base coat (I love this base coat – it really grips the nail/polish) and Orly Won’t Chip top coat with this manicure.

Packaging

I’m not sure how I feel about the packaging of the Julep polishes. I like the shape of the bottles because they fit well together and there’s room for a lot of them on my shelf. The lids have little stickers on them so you can swatch your colors, which is a great idea, in theory but since the brushes ate attached to the lid, I don’t see how I can actually do a swatch unless I sacrifice a paintbrush.

Color

Caitlin: Of the two, I prefer the color of Caitlin, possibly because pink is my favorite color and it bears my middle name :-). To me, Caitlin has a lot more depth because of the subtle orange-y gold shimmer. It’s bright and highly pigmented.

Mariska: This is actually one of my favorite colors of orange – it’s not a yellow orange, it’s more of a true orange. Color is also very pigmented.

Application

Caitlin: The application for this is pretty standard. The formula was not streaky – two coats gives you great coverage. It is ever so slightly sheer (if you look REALLY hard) and dries to a shiny finish.

Mariska: This polish has a much thicker consistency than most others I’ve tried. This makes it a bit more difficult to apply neatly. You still need two coats of it as well, because it applies slightly streaky. The coverage is opaque and dries to a satiny finish.

Longevity

Caitlin: This one has excellent staying power. Day 3 of my manicure and it’s still looking great (very minor tip wear, but I’m pretty hard on my hands).

Mariska: This one is not lasting as long. I’m on day two of my manicure and I already have some large chips/flaking on all of my tips. This may have something to do with the fact it has a satin finish; I find that this formula never lasts long on me.

Conclusion

I will definitely be wearing Caitlin again! Solid color, solid formula and lasts awhile. Mariska, I’m not as keen on, because of issues with the formula; the color itself is nice.
