Fortune Cookie Soap Box: Summer Edition

It’s almost summer, and arriving with the warm weather is a new Fortune Cookie Soap quarterly box. Now that I have a second box to check out, I have to say this has become one of my favorite subscriptions ever. Let’s take a look!

This quarter’s theme, “A Pirate’s Life for Me, is right on point. It’s a solid lineup of products inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean movies (the latest of which is opening later this month). As ambivalent as I’ve felt about the last couple of movies, I still love the first ones and I’m excited about it being the theme of the box!

BRING ME THAT HORIZON Fortune Cookie Soap:

Sweet cactus pear, desert ghost flowers, water lilies, sea mist and warm sands.

I’m loving the design of the soap. The colors are sunset meets ocean, and the sprinkling of gold reminds me of treasure. The scent is very pleasant and strong. I can’t pick out anything in particular from the description (what does sea mist and warm sand smell like anyway…fish maybe?). My overall impression is a mildly fruity, strongly soapy floral combination. It’s quite lovely.

AQUA DE VIDA Facial Cleansing Oil:

Sweet coconut and spiced rum.

Try as I might, all I can smell is citrus with a hint of coconut. Yummy, but not what I was expecting. I’m not the biggest fan of oil cleansers – my skin is ultra oily, so they leave me feeling like I haven’t washed. For drier skin though, I’m told oil cleansers are the way to go. It does leave the skin feeling moisturized and it’s great for removing eye/lip makeup, so I’ll get some use out of it.

MERMAID TEARS Shimmering Perfume Oil:

Delicate sugar cane and morning dew.

Maybe I’ve got citrus on the brain, because candied citrus is what I smell for about half an hour when I first apply this. It dries down to a greener, slightly fresh and more floral scent after awhile, with a lightly sugary lemon undertone. It’s fairly long lasting, lingering most of the day. Definitely a hit with me. And just to note – even though it’s got shimmer in it, nothing has ended up on my skin (yet), even after shaking and applying.

PARLAY Lip Scrub:

Lime and coconut.

Nailed it! This one reminds me of a mojito sans mint. It’s ultra fresh smelling (and tasting) and is a great way to gently exfoliate the lips. It’s not as greasy as some other formulas I’ve tried and leaves everything feeling smooth.

MONKEY BUSINESS Whipped Cream:

Zesty lemon, pineapple and warm banana almond cake.

This formula is a bit heavier than other whipped formulas I’ve tried, but it absorbs well and feels very moisturizing. I’m using it at night for my hands and feet and it works great! I was slightly worried that the banana would be artificial and overpowering, but the flavors are quite well balanced. The pineapple and lemon give it just a little tartness that keeps the banana from being too sweet, and there’s a creamy note that really  ties everything together.

BLACK PEARL Exfoliating Body Wash:

Fresh tropical pineapple, pink pepper, fresh Cuban tobacco, sensual suede, & light notes of peony and jasmine.

I’m not even sure how to describe the smell of this. It reminds me of leather (in essence more than smell), but I can’t quite put my finger on what it actually smells like. It’s probably one of the more unusual scents I’ve sampled recently. It lightly exfoliates without being too rough.

WALK THE PLANK OCD Hand Sanitizer:

Oak aged bourbon, fresh grown Caribbean sugar cane, sparkling pomelo, dried tobacco and mandarin zest.

Love this one. I definitely smell the bourbon and mandarin zest, which gives it a sharp spicy impression. The smell fades fairly quickly (so you don’t have to worry about everyone thinking you had too much to drink at lunch :-D). The shimmer also pretty much disappears once  you rub it in. I’m really excited to get hand sanitizer in boxes, because I get so much use out of them.

CALYPSO Solid Foot Scrub:

Peach blossoms, juicy berries, precious floral hearts, sugary amber, musk, ripe fig.

Last but not least, we have the foot scrub (and an adorable pirate coin they included in the box for fun). I can’t find this one on the website, so the value is a total guess. It’s smells kind of like generic jelly beans to me (in a good way). I’m excited to give this one a try!

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Once again, I’m impressed with the Fortune Cookie Soap Box. I really liked all of the scents and products this time around. The value is not as high as some other subscriptions, but it’s fairly decent. The cost of the box is $19.99 per quarter, and I calculated a value of about $29 (with some estimating on my part). Of course, that value goes down if you don’t like something, but that has yet to be an issue for me. All in all, it’s a great way to sample new collections from the company.
